Creekin’ in Wyoming

As fortunate as we are to have the Grey Reef and Miracle Mile in our backyard... occasionally a mountain stream calls our name.
Sometimes it feels like in Wyoming we have two seasons Winter and Summer. Spring is amazing and watching the landscape bounce back from a long winter and pop in the most vibrant and varied shades of green dotted with wildflowers with distant snowcapped peaks as the backdrop is about as amazing a sight to behold as you can find anywhere. But spring can often be more an extension of winter, and then “bam” it is summer. Fall is the same, the golden aspens and cottonwoods turning makes the landscape glow and cool nights and comfortable days are reprieve from hot dry summers. But winter comes quick. The price of admission for incredible summer days, fishing and camping in the mountains and exploring this incredible state and the fisheries it offers, is the long winter.
We are for sure fortunate to have the North Platte with the “Reef” and “Mile” in our backyard and wouldn’t trade them for anything. Right now, we are hitting the classic summertime fisheries and some of the most fun you can have with a fly rod. Which means heading to the mountains and small streams. Good old fashion creekin’. Simplicity at its finest. Wet wading and the cool refreshing feel of water rushing through the legs on a hot summer day. A puck of basic dry flies (hopefully some big old gaudy hoppers), spool of tippet, and floatant stuck in a shirt pocket and you are set. Soak post fishing beverage of choice in the creek by the truck to celebrate when you get back and it is off to explore. The fish might not all be huge, but normally plentiful, willing and not super technical. Just fun dry fly eats are the reward for a decent drift in the most likely of spots. It seems like most running water in our mountains has trout, so throw a dart at the map and poke around to find the next secret hot spot.
Get out and enjoy. Winter is coming.
