Fall is fast approaching on the North Platte and it's one of our favorite times of year to fish.
As the August dog days slip into the rearview mirror, we have some of the best fishing of the season to look forward to. The cool evenings drop water temps to optimal trout perfect comfort zone to keep em happy and feeling froggy. The flows have dropped post irrigation season and bars, rifles and slots channelize and are easily read to help concentrate and see where the best feeding lies and resting pools. It takes a lot of guess work out of “where are they”. Fall hatches can be prolific and pods of fish up and working, Pac-Manning every bug coming down the lane and easily reveal where the action is at. Different sections of the river fish well. Other watersheds in the region are hitting their prime as well. So, it is a good time to add variety. From the Reef and Mile to Thermop. It is probably all fishing well.
All the above moves the needle on the fun factor that is fall on the North Platte, but what really seals the deal, is the variety of tactics that fish well. You can find fish that will play any style that suits your fancy. Dry fly guy? Check. As noted, there are great hatches and normally a target rich environment. Dry drop? Check.
