Let's talk saltwater fly fishing in San Pedro Belize!
San Pedro, Belize holds a special place in the hearts of several individuals on the Ugly Bug crew. With the second longest barrier reef in the world, it is home to some of the best saltwater fly fishing in the world. Inside the reef you can find plenty of bonefish to go around. Along it's edge you can find tarpon, permit and barracudas.
Flying in from Belize City, you can see the reef of white surf along San Pedro's coast. Once you land, find a golfcart rental for your trip. No cars here. Just carts... lots of them. The island of San Pedro is crowded, and everyone is busy. Be sure to check out the local restaurants, coffee shops, and fruit stands. Some of our favorites include The Farmstand for coffee, smoothies, and breakfast. Checkout the Palapa bar for fish tacos and an ice cold Landshark. The Purple Pelican is great for some top notch dinner and cocktails. If you have an off day, make the trek out to Secret Beach for a little relaxation!
Now for the fishing. You'll want a couple different rods. One for Bonefish, one for Tarpon, and one for Permit. Bonefish require a 7-8wt rod, rigged with 10-12lb leader. Bring your shrimp! Some weighted, some without. Gotcha's, Christmas Island Special's, and Crazy Charlie's are their favorites!
Permit require a little heftier rod, typically and 9-10wt rod will work best. Use 16-20lb leader and throw on your crab pattern of choice! We really like the Flexo San Crab, Grand Slam Crab's and the Enrico crab!
Tarpon love the big stuff... so bring your 11-12wt rod, and big tarpon toads! We recommend 60lb leader for these guys! Other than that, make sure to have a great pair of sunglasses! The right polarized lens will go a long way, when all your on the hunt for is a shadow or a flash. Bajio and Costa are great options. We carry tons of saltwater flies, terminal and gear, so be sure to call if you have any questions!
That's that... book those flights and accommodations, and enjoy! San Pedro is waiting!
